Working at Suburban Hospital was pivotal to shaping my professional development in trauma care. I started working at Suburban Hospital as a trauma resuscitation technician, where I first experienced how teamwork and preparation can literally save lives.

I am returning to present at the Critical Issues in Trauma Conference (as the keynote speaker). My presentation, “Crisis Leadership: Lessons from America’s Heroes,” will focus on calm decision-making, effective communication, and caring for those dependent on you.

Throughout my experiences in trauma surgery, tactical environments, disaster response, and national medical planning, I have learned that leadership is a skill developed over time. Preparation is the most fundamental aspect of developing this skill set. While preparation may not always be apparent, it plays a significant role in determining outcomes once a crisis occurs. Regular after-action reviews and continued preparedness enhance teams’ ability to build strength.

Communication is also essential. Effective communication during times of crisis provides direction to other team members. Supportive words of encouragement promote teamwork and support during times of high-pressure situations. Team trust creates a climate for successful execution.

I still rely heavily upon the core competencies that I developed while working at Suburban Hospital.

This conference highlighted key areas of leadership, teamwork, and performance under resource constraints. The conversations and ideas generated during this conference further enhanced our mutual mission to provide the highest level of care possible to patients.

Interacting with students brought back memories of how I entered this profession. Students’ passion for trauma care gives me confidence regarding the future of trauma care.

Returning to Suburban Hospital had great personal significance for me. The values I have used throughout my career were instilled in me by the individuals at Suburban Hospital. I am grateful to all of those currently leading through service at Suburban Hospital.

It is wonderful to be home again.
